CLASSES:            Tues., Thurs. 1:40 p.m.-2:55 p.m. in Kettering 217

TEXT:                    Workshop Statistics:  Discovery with Data and Fathom (3rd edition) by Rossman, Chance, and Lock.  Key College Publishing, 2009.  BRING THIS TO EVERY CLASS!!!

TECHNOLOGY:  The dynamic statistics software package Fathom will be used for most classroom investigations, homework problems, exams, and the project.  Click on the Fathom 2 icon on any campus computer to access the software.  The Student CD contains applets and data files for all of the activities.

HOMEWORK:  In-class activities and homework activities will be assigned during every class period.  Starting with class on Tuesday, August 30th, homework problems will be collected every Tuesday and Thursday at the beginning of class.  If you

are having difficulty with any of the activities, please bring questions to my office or ask me during class.  You will complete in-class activities in groups and we will discuss their answers as a class.  You may discuss the problems on the homework activities with other members of the class, but you should write up your solutions independently, and you should mention any classmates with whom you work.  Failure to do this will result in points being deducted from the assignment.  The homework set should be legible, written in correct English (including complete sentences when appropriate), and stapled.  Late homework will be accepted with a penalty of 10% of the point value of the assignment per weekday it is late.

EXAMS:  All missed exams will be given a grade of “0” unless PRIOR arrangements are made, and you have a legitimate reason for missing class.  Personal travel plans will never be considered a legitimate reason for missing an exam.  You will and must be able to use Fathom on all exams.  Exams may include a take-home portion.

PROJECT:  Working in groups of 2-3, you will select a question to answer by collecting, describing, and analyzing data.  The project will consist of two preliminary/progress reports, a final report, and a 10-minute class presentation.  Each group’s question must be unique, but the group is free to select its own question.  You will receive details as to the evaluation of the project on a separate handout.

GRADING:           Exam 1                                    100 points              Comprehensive

Exam 2                                    100 points                 Final Exam          175 points

Project                                    125 points              Homework             175 points*

                        Attendance/Participation     25 points

*Note:  The total number of points on homework assignments this semester will be greater than 175 points.  I will calculate your homework percentage based upon the number of points we actually have and take this percentage of 175 to determine your scaled homework points for calculating your final grade.

The chart below lists the lowest grade that a student will possibly receive if his/her scaled course points fall in the corresponding ranges.
