TEXT: Precalculus Enhanced with Graphing Utilities (4th Edition) by Sullivan and Sullivan. Prentice Hall, 2006. BRING THIS TO EVERY CLASS!!!
TECHNOLOGY:
A graphing calculator such as the TI-83 is required. Students having
the TI-83 may have an advantage in the course for this is the calculator that I
will use in class for demonstrations. If
you plan to use a different calculator, make sure you have an owners manual
that explains how to use it. The TI-83
is the calculator recommended for other mathematics courses at
HOMEWORK: Reading assignments, practice problems, and homework problems will be assigned during every
class. I will assume that you have completed the reading assignment for each class period, and thus comprehension of some of the material covered in class may depend upon this reading. The reading assignments may cover material for which you are responsible to know for the course, although time constraints may result in this material not being covered in class. The practice problems should be a gauge for how well you understand the reading. Starting on Tuesday, January 23rd, homework problems will be due in my office every Tuesday and Friday by 5pm. If you are having difficulty with the reading, practice problems, or homework problems, please bring questions to my office or to class. You may discuss the problems on the homework sets with other members of the class, but you should write up your solutions independently, and you should mention any classmates with whom you work. Failure to do this will result in points being deducted from the assignment. The homework set should be legible, written in correct English (including complete sentences when appropriate), and stapled. Late homework will be accepted with a penalty of 10% of the point value of the assignment per weekday it is late.
EXAMS:
All missed exams will be given a grade of 0 unless PRIOR
arrangements are made, and you have a legitimate reason for missing class. Personal travel plans will never be
considered a legitimate reason for missing an exam. You will be able to use calculators on all
exams.
GRADING: Exam 1 75 points Comprehensive
Exam 2 75 points Final Exam 150 points
Exam 3 75 points Homework 150 points*
Exam 4 75 points
*Note: The total number of points on homework assignments this semester will be greater than 150 points. I will calculate your homework percentage based upon the number of points we actually have and take this percentage of 150 to determine your scaled homework points for calculating your final grade. The chart below lists the lowest grade that a student will possibly receive if his/her scaled course points fall in the corresponding ranges.
