Each homework problem that you hand in will be graded on a 9 point scale as follows:
9. Fully achieves the purpose of the
task with some insight.
* Displays an in-depth understanding of concepts and content
* Communicates clearly and effectively
8. Accomplishes the purpose of the task.
* Displays substantial understanding of concepts and content, but may include
extraneous information or some less
important ideas may be missing.
* Communicates successfully
7. Purpose of the task not fully achieved;
needs elaboration. Some strategies may be inappropriate of ineffective.
* Gaps in conceptual understanding are evident
* Arguments may not be clearly presented
6. Important purposes of the task are
not achieved; work may need redirection; approach to task may lead away
from
its completion
* Presents fragmented understanding of concepts
* Arguments may be logically invalid
5. Purposes of task are not accomplished.
* Shows little evidence of appropriate reasoning
* Does not successfully communicate relevant ideas
0-4. Little or no effort is displayed in attempting to achieve purpose
of the task.
Problems that are turned in on time and that merit a score of 7 points
or below may be resubmitted with the next homework assignment to receive
up to a total of 8 points. This is important for you to work on your
ability to think and communicate mathematically. In professional
mathematics, editors of journals often require rewrites of mathematical
articles. It seems appropriate to require the same from upper level
mathematics students.
