AHG 501 THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

This seminar is designed to immerse you in the study of the American Revolution. It focuses on

three major topics: political developments in North America and the British Empire and the

arguments for and against independence, culminating in the Declaration of Independence; the

Revolutionary War as a military, social, and cultural event in the development of the American

nation and government; and the United States under the Articles of Confederation. The

fundamental question guiding this course is: What were the political ideas of the American

Revolution, and how did those ideas take shape and give shape to events and institutions before,

during, and immediately after the Revolution?
