Licensure in Ohio
Teaching students with exceptional
learning needs is done across categories of disability in the state of
Ohio. Ohio recognizes all federal categories of disability to
make students eligible for special education. But students are
taught by teacher prepared for different intensities of need for
intervention.
Students with
mild to moderate need for educational intervention are taught by
teachers licensed to intervene at that range of intensity.
Students with moderate to intensive need for educational intervention
are taught by teachers trained to intervene at that range of
intensity.
These ranges of
intesity are irrespective of disability category. For example, a
student with a learning disability might require only mild to moderate
intervention. If her disability were more extreme, however,
necessitating assitive technology and augmentative communication, her
intervention needs might be termed moderate to intensive, requiring a
teacher trained to deliver those more intensive strategies of
intervention.
At Ashland University students may choose to be trained in either of
these intervention ranges. Often a student will choose one
licensure area as an undergraduate and add the other in a graduate
program.
